Operation Santa Claus’ ‘Caring Community, Caring Christmas’ campaign
raises over HK$16.7 million to support 19 charity projects
Date:2021-02-04

While 2020 was a challenging year for many, Operation Santa Claus (OSC) continued to promote the spirit of giving to benefit those in need with its campaign ‘Caring Community, Caring Christmas’, raising more than HK$16.7 million in donations.

Jointly organised by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Radio 3 and the South China Morning Post (SCMP), OSC 2020 successfully raised funds for 19 selected beneficiaries to run charitable projects helping those in need from Hong Kong’s community, specifically children, young people, the elderly, as well as people with physical and mental disabilities. Although two-thirds of fundraising events were cancelled or postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, over 60 corporate and school donors, and thousands more continued showing their generous support to the campaign.

Said Director of Broadcasting LEUNG Ka-wing: “It has been a very special year for OSC, with many supporters overcoming the challenge of driving a fund-raising campaign while facing the global pandemic. Although we haven't been able to hold community events like we usually do, many people have shown care and generosity in different ways, giving hope to the vulnerable in our city.”

OSC celebrated the conclusion of this year’s campaign by announcing four awards to noteworthy corporations and schools for their fundraising efforts. They are:

  • - Top Corporate Fundraiser - Morgan Stanley

  • - Most Creative Corporate Fundraiser - Swire Properties Limited

  • - Top School Fundraiser - Discovery Mind Educational Organisation

  • - Most Creative School Fundraiser - Singapore International School (Hong Kong)

This year’s campaign also welcomed new donors including the Chen Yet-Sen Family Foundation, Pacific Coffee Company Limited, IKEA (Hong Kong), Chinese Recreation Club, Hong Kong and Wofoo Foundation Limited, contributing to support OSC’s cause. OSC also benefited from the contributions of its two high-profile ambassadors, Olympic swimmer Alex FONG and artiste Pakho CHAU, who performed the first-ever OSC theme song encouraging Hong Kong’s community to get involved and participate in one of the city’s most recognised charity initiatives.

“OSC plays an important role in supporting the community, I am glad to see that the three-decade long partnership between the Post and RTHK continues to inspire and motivate corporate donors and members of the public to do their part for our city. This year’s outcome is unexpectedly great and our society has shown the best of humanity by demonstrating the spirit of giving during such difficult times," said SCMP’s Editor-in-Chief Tammy TAM.

“This is my fifth and final year with Operation Santa Claus. I am very happy and proud to have been part of this truly meaningful charity,” said Mr. LEUNG. “So on behalf of the families and individuals in need and the NGOs which support them, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s OSC.”

A special video of the 2020 OSC Campaign was released today to announce the total donations raised and salute its most outstanding supporters with special awards. View at: osc.scmp.com/2020-closing or app7.rthk.hk/special/osc2020/closing.htm.
