Join Forces to Foster People-to-people Bond
Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) held the "RTHK Summer POP UP" event today (August 11) at Victoria Park to socially engage the Indonesian community in Hong Kong. The event included a special live performance by acclaimed Indonesian singer Nabilla Gomes who traveled to Hong Kong specifically for the occasion, alongside with performances by Hong Kong singer Lagchun, Indonesian-Hong Kong singer-songwriters and dance groups. The event aims to foster people-to-people bond which is one of the five co-operation priorities of the Belt and Road Initiative.
In February this year, RTHK signed a memorandum of understanding with the Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) to strengthen cooperation. Under the MOU, the two broadcasters have jointly produced the Indonesian radio programme "Halo Jakarta! Hello Hong Kong!". The "RTHK Summer POP UP" event, held in celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day, brought the programme outdoors to allow close interaction with the audience.
Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Hong Kong Mr. Yul Edison, President Director of RRI Mr. Hendrasmo, and Director of Broadcasting Mr. Eddie Cheung officiated at the “One ‘Tape’, One Road” ceremony, which symbolisedthe programme as a bridge of communication, deepening the connection between the people of both places.
In his speech, Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Edison highlighted the growing importance of media, emphasizing its role in connecting people, combating stereotypes and addressing misinformation. “The collaborative efforts of RTHK and RRI have been influential in bridging Indonesia and Hong Kong ever closer. The timing of this event was particularly meaningful as Indonesia is going to celebrate the 79th anniversary of the Independence Day in a few days”, said Consul-General Edison.
President Director of RRI, Mr. Hendrasmo remarked, “RRI and RTHK has established cooperation since February 2024. One of the cooperation is the joint programme ‘Halo Jakarta! Hello Hong Kong!’, broadcast in Bahasa Indonesia by Voice of Indonesia and RTHK. This programme connects the Indonesian community in Hong Kong with their relatives and other Indonesians at home.”
Director of Broadcasting, Mr. Cheung said, “RTHK has been working closely with the RRI to foster people-to-people bond to deepen mutual understanding between Indonesia and Hong Kong. The event shows that Hong Kong is an open and inclusive society. Through joint programmes and events, the two broadcasters show how to put people-to-people bond under the Belt and Road Initiative into practice.”
