The Director of Broadcasting, Mr. Eddie Cheung, led the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) delegation to attend the 61st Asia-pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly and Associated Meetings held in Istanbul, Türkiye. The delegation concluded their visit last night (23 October) and departed for Hong Kong.
More than 500 representatives of broadcasting organizations from 64 countries or regions attended the ABU General Assembly themed “The Nexus of AI, Broadcasting, and Society”.
The Director was invited to moderate the Super Panel of the General Assembly, at which international broadcasting leaders from the European Broadcasting Union, North American Broadcasters Association, African Union of Broadcasting and ABU discussed the transformational impact of AI on the broadcasting industry. Last year, the Director also moderated a Super Panel on technologies at the ABU General Assembly held in Seoul, South Korea.
Ms. Echo Wai, Controller (Production Services) of RTHK, made a presentation at the members sharing session to explain how RTHK strives to embrace technologies, including AI, for enhanced productivity and innovation. At her presentation, Ms. Wai unveiled RTHK’s plan to use AI to translate selected TV programmes such as “A New Look into ASEAN” into Indonesian for online broadcasting.
RTHK’s English news report on AI – “Learning with AI: Bots V Brains” won a special commendation in the “Radio ABU Perspective Awards” category at the ABU Prizes 2024 for the excellent quality of the report. Also, the radio drama “Bad Time Story”, jointly presented by Home and Youth Affairs Bureau, Family Council and RTHK, was one of the finalists for the “Radio/Audio Drama Awards”.
Concluding the visit, Mr. Cheung said that RTHK has been actively participating in ABU's work and activities to connect with broadcasters in the region. During this year's General Assembly, the RTHK delegates actively participated in various working groups with a view to sharing RTHK’s experience of transitioning to smart broadcasting and maximizing members’ attention to Hong Kong’s openness to new ideas and new technologies. The RTHK delegation also took the opportunity to discuss collaboration initiatives with broadcasters in the region, and invite them to visit Hong Kong to feel the vibrancy of the city first-hand.
