From Childhood Musical Prodigy to International Glory
Hong Kong-born pianist Aristo Sham has recently gained international acclaim by winning both the Gold Medal and the Audience Award at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, standing out among 340 participants from around the globe. RTHK Radio 4 seized the opportunity to organise a special event today (1 July) titled "Meeting with Aristo Sham: A Celebratory Gathering on Radio 4." During this event, Aristo Sham shared his deep connection with RTHK since childhood and reflected on his remarkable musical journey.
As Hong Kong's only fine music channel, Radio 4 has devoted considerable effort to promoting classical music and providing platforms for local young musicians to showcase their talents. Aristo Sham began learning the piano at the age of three, passed his Grade 8 piano examination, and started composing at six. During his youth, he participated in numerous RTHK events, developing a profound connection with Radio 4.
At today's gathering, Director of Broadcasting Angelina Kwan extended heartfelt congratulations to Aristo, an old friend of Radio 4, while the station shared precious video footage with the audience, highlighting Aristo’s involvement in RTHK activities. Aristo recounted his unforgettable memories of attending RTHK events and performed pieces from his Van Cliburn International Piano Competition repertoire, allowing music lovers to witness his growth and transformation.
Aristo attributes his musical success to the devoted mentorship of distinguished piano educator, Professor Eleanor Wong. During the event, Professor Wong and Aristo’s mother shared the stories behind Aristo’s journey towardsexcellence. Renowned pianist Nancy Loo also engaged in an inspiring discussion with Aristo, providing the audience with profound musical insights.
