RTHK Lunar New Year Celebration for the Year of the Dog

Dogs are known as ‘man's best friends’ with their intelligence, loyalty and affection. Welcoming the Year of the Dog, 2018 also marks the 90th anniversary of broadcasting in Hong Kong.  Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) invited friends and top leaders from the local electronic media to “RTHK Lunar New Year Celebration for the Year of the Dog” today (27th February) to share their blessings and to celebrate the 90 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong.

Energetic and astonishing drum performance by 16 students from Shanghai Alumni Primary School commenced the celebration.  Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development     Edward YAU and Director of Broadcasting LEUNG Ka-wing officiated the kick-off ceremony for the “90 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong” after their speeches.  With accordance to tradition, they also hosted the ribbon-tying and eye-dotting ceremonies before the lion dance performance and expressed wishes for good fortune in the future.

Director of Broadcasting LEUNG Ka-wing mentioned in his speech that striding into the 90th anniversary, RTHK would put forward a series of radio and television programmesto showcase the developments and achievements in broadcasting services.  They include radio programmes “90th Anniversary of Hong Kong Broadcasting” – reviews the history of broadcasting service in an academically interesting way; “Traditional Chinese Opera: Lung Cheung Showcase” – revisits the brilliant phenomena of the Lung Cheung Cantonese Opera Troupe; radio and television synergy project “DJ Talk Show” – invites renowned radio presenters from different generations to share their views on DJ cultures; retrospective TV programme “School Programme Review” – recalls our collective childhood memory with classic ETV footages, “Hong Kong Connection” – reviews the changes of our era with the 40 years’ highly acclaimed documentary; “Pop Culture Icons” – records the stories of the leading icons in broadcasting to present a full picture of Hong Kong’s broadcasting culture.  The icons include renowned DJ Uncle Ray; veteran broadcasters LI Ngaw and SIU Sheung; famous lyricist CHENG Kwok-kong; Hong Kong top football commentators HO Kam-kong and HO Ching-kong; drama master CHUNG King-fai and the facilitator of Hong Kong Public Service Broadcasting CHEUNG Man-yee.

To maintain a close link with the public, RTHK has set up a thematic website (rthk.hk/rthk90) and scheduled an exhibition “90 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong” in late November in the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

Jane CHEN; Senior Vice President (Commercial & Sales Management) of now TV, PCCW Media Ltd. CHOI Wai-kin; Executive Vice President of Phoenix Satellite TV Holdings Ltd. YEUNG Ka-keung; and General Manager of Television Broadcasts Ltd. CHEONG Sin-keung.

“RTHK Lunar New Year Celebration for the Year of the Dog”, hosted by RTHK presenters Alex LEE and Kiki TAM, complimented by a Chinese couplet written by the veteran media practitioner YEUNG Shui-sang, expressed good wishes for the New Year.  The event was broadcast live at 2:30pm on Radio 2 (FM 94.8 – 96.9), RTHK TV31 and 31A.  It can also be found on RTHK website (tv.rthk.hk) and mobile applications “RTHK Screen” and “RTHK Mine”.
